COHORT1922

E X H I B I T I O N

Taking its title from the artists’ current period of study, Midpoint details the multifaceted artistic process of Cohort 1922, University of Northampton 2nd year BA Fine Art and Painting and Drawing students. Through the fractured, deconstructed, and layered digital documentation of physical works, the online exhibition brings forward the systems of artistic experimentation across its diverse cohort.

Responding to the conditions of the world around them, Cohort 1922 moved outside the limitations of the physical and in-person exhibition. Through a narrative of process, Midpoint not only showcases the unique methods and works of its exhibiting artists but speaks to their resilience. A means to record the meditative, experimental, and healing processes of art-making, the project navigates a crisis through artistic practice.

Midpoint’s landing page is gridded with digitally rendered icons. Fluid in form, the three-dimensionally animated symbols rotate and spiral in and out of one another. These virtual objects each represent a UoN artist and act as portals in which to transport to the artist’s studio. From early sketchbook renderings, timelapse documentation, and series after series of experiments and failures, Cohort 1922 showcases the methodologies they use in the making of their artworks. Moving from artist to artist, the fluidity of practice guides its users between pages, with each selection of a digital icon. Through this observance of practice, Midpoint invites the public into the artist studio, absolving the formality of the exhibition through its custom and interactive web-based platform.
